Scoring and Points System

(Effective from 1 May 2026)

Each athlete’s performance is scored out of 1,000 points per discipline — one for running and one for swimming — giving a total possible score of 2,000 points.

In the running event, for every second slower than the standard time, 2 points are subtracted from your 1,000-point base. For every second faster, 2 points are added.

In the swimming event, for every second slower, 5 points are subtracted, and for every second faster, 5 points are added.
For U/13 athletes swimming 50 metres, the adjustment is 10 points per second instead of 5.

Most biathletes aim for a combined score above 2,000 points, as this is typically the qualifying benchmark for selection to represent their province at the SA Biathlon Championships.
